The Fix #116: Nick Usborne on turning AI into a super-human copywriting assistant that makes your life easier
It’s 2008.
I’m standing at the back of a conference room at a Marriot in Delray Beach, Florida.
I’m naked.
Actually, I’m not. But I felt the rhythm there needed such an exclamation.
Anyway, there are hundreds of copywriters mulling around—mostly American ones.
I’m a little overwhelmed.
It’s not long since I became a copywriter myself. It’s not long since I joined Agora (not quite realizing how big the company was). And it’s not long since I’ve been flown out to Florida to hear from a load of experts in what I’m coming to realize pretty fast is called ‘direct-response copywriting’.
As I say, Americans are everywhere—being positive, polite, smiling, and saying hello, mulling around the experts and speakers, asking questions, nodding enthusiastically.
One of the speakers is across from me, preparing to go on stage.
Someone asks him if his microphone is working.
Wait…
What?
He’s English—or at least I detect an English accent.
Turns out it’s a copywriter called Nick Usborne, who, after working in the ad industry in the UK had moved out to the US and was working with AWAI.
I can’t remember what he spoke about—I can barely remember anything about that trip aside from the barman learning my drink of choice pretty quick—but I’ve always kept an eye on what Nick’s been up to, especially where AI is concerned (he was experimenting with AI long before it became as hyped as it is now).
But ever since then, to my shame, we’d not spoken.
Thankfully, when one of our readers got in touch to nominate Nick as a guest on the show, I was glad to use it as an excuse to catch up with him.
We had no agenda—we just went with the flow to see where the conversation took us.
It took us to an interesting discussion about AI and how you can use it as a copywriter.
Enjoy.
Best,
Glenn
