The Fix #91: A better way to think about whether you should niche as a copywriter

I’ve written copy in almost every niche you can imagine.

I’ve written copy in the financial publishing industry for Agora in the UK, the US, and Australia. My copy has even been translated into French.

I’ve written copy in the property industry, selling office space in Canary Wharf in London, buildings on Fifth Avenue in New York, and million-pound science park developments for Oxford University.

I’ve written copy in the health industry, in education, in data management, in mining, in marketing… you name it, I’ve written in it.

I’ve even written copy to sell strands of Elvis’ hair.

So, when people ask me if you need to niche in copywriting to be successful, my answer is always pretty much the same: you can niche if you want, but you can still be successful if you don’t.

Admittedly, it’s a boring answer. And thankfully, when a reader got in touch asking us to elaborate on “the niching issue” we had a lot more to say.

In fact, I think we’ve managed to come up with a much better way to think about niching altogether.

Judge for yourself by giving the latest episode a whirl.

That’s right… a WHIRL.

Best,
Glenn
