You receive an email from a man you don’t know.

He’s asking to meet in the foyer of a Baltimore hotel.

Strange.

You check the email address.

Wait.

That can’t be right.

You check again:

It’s from “Agent Z.”

What’s going on? Who is “Agent Z?” And why does he want to meet me?

Flash forward a decade or so and Agent Z is on your computer screen, smiling.

You see, “Agent Z” turned out to be a chap called Aaron Gentzler, a copywriter and publisher at Agora Financial.

When we worked together at Agora, Aaron’s email address combined his name in such a way that his email appeared to suggest he was just called “Agent Z” — at least to my warped mind.

Coupled with the fact he was highly respected in the industry, we junior writers were intimidated.

We shouldn’t have been.

He is in fact one of the nicest chaps you’ll meet and back then I also discovered we share an appreciation for the work of novelist Paul Auster.

Years later, it was a pleasure to catch up with Aaron again last week and talk shop.

Indeed, I finally got to ask why so many elite copywriters in the direct-response world seem to love golf — so it’s a truly insightful episode.
